With the Wachau, Göttweig was in 2001 placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. » more

Cultural Heritage of our Country

A few remnants of the abbeys medieval buildings have remained: Parts of the Erentrudis Chapel (built in 1072) and the Old Fortress, the Crypt with the Reliquary of our founder Saint Altmann, the Gothic Choir of our Church, and a part of the Medieval Cloister, the "Lapidarium".

Today's Baroque Monastery Complex was built according to plans of the Emperor's architect, Lucas von Hildebrandt, during 1720 to 1740, after the old Monastery was almost totally destroyed by fire in 1718.  » Museum - Concerts - Visiting hours

Monastery Wine Estate

The Göttweig Monastery wine estate has a tradition of more than 900 years. With 26 hectares of vineyards in the Wachau and the Krems valley, it is among the largest in the region and, due to its continual operation since 1083, one of the oldest in Austria. The Monastery's 1083 founding document mentions many localities of Lower Austria for the first time, as well as vineyards and vintners located there. This early record of viticulture in the Göttweig documents is of special importance for Lower Austria.
